Why This Site Exists

We’ve been navigating food allergies for over two decades.

This journey didn’t stop in childhood. It grew alongside us — from kids’ menus to independence, from parent-led conversations to adult ownership.

The questions are still asked. The preparation still happens. But the confidence has deepened with experience.

Our first flight was terrifying.

At the beginning, we stayed close to home — the Jersey Shore felt manageable. Then we ventured to Disney, which anyone in the allergy world knows goes above and beyond for families like ours. It felt safe. Predictable. Controlled.

But I wanted more. I wanted my kids to experience beyond just the Jersey Shore and Mickey Mouse. So we pushed our boundaries.

We traveled to our first all-inclusive resort in Turks and took our first Disney cruise. I grew braver, planning road trips out west and navigating new cities and unfamiliar kitchens. One year, we embraced adventure and spent ten days in Costa Rica.

Every trip brought its own set of questions, conversations, and backup plans. It demanded hours—sometimes months—of research: reading menus, emailing restaurants, calling ahead, and making reservations long before we packed our suitcases.

This past New Year’s Eve, we found ourselves at dinner in Aruba at a resort that couldn’t accommodate my son, who is now 23. In that moment, it struck me. We had been to so many places that worked for us, enjoyed countless meals that felt comfortable, and embarked on journeys that reminded us why we keep pushing forward.

And I realized — I need to share that.

Traveling with food allergies can be scary, it is also achievable. Allergy families journey through many stages of stress as we raise our children into adulthood, and that stress doesn’t vanish once they grow up.

The least we can do is savor a family vacation. Cautiously Hungry exists to share the places where we found comfort, the questions we asked, and the decisions we made—not to guarantee safety, but to show that exploring the world is possible with preparation, communication, and trust in ourselves.

If sharing our experiences empowers even one family to feel more confident planning their next adventure, then this site has done exactly what it was meant to do.

If You’re New Here

Welcome — we’re glad you found us.

Cautiously Hungry is a personal travel journal about navigating the world with food allergies. Everything you’ll read here is based on our experiences, our comfort zone, and the questions we asked on that visit.

Our son has food allergies to peanuts and tree nuts, and as he has gotten older, sesame and soy have become part of the conversation as well. These allergies shape how we plan, where we eat, and the choices we make while traveling.

We don’t guarantee safety.
We don’t tell anyone what they should do.
We simply share what worked for us.
